Various Errors That Affect the Coin Value September 24, 2011

Coin collectors are always on the lookout for defective coins. This is because they are worth more than normal ones. The old coin values can also be affected by defects. When it comes to US coin collecting, the defective coins are very rare. Hence, many collectors seek them actively. Several factors like age, mint condition and demand contribute towards increasing the value of the coins. A major factor that affects the value of a coin is the errors present in it. Mint mistakes that occur while the coin is being struck increase the value of the coin. Die errors occur when multiple dies are used in the minting process. Since each die has a specific characteristic, noticeable differences occur. Double die errors occur when the coin remains in the die instead of exiting. Thus it gets struck again resulting in a duplicate design. While some have noticeable duplicate designs, others require a powerful microscope or magnifying glass.
